The majority of our students enroll in our Master of Arts (M.A.) program in political science, specializing in one of three focus areas: public policy, global politics, or American politics. This 30-credit program allows full-time students to complete three courses each semester, typically earning their degree within two years. We offer a low-residency online format for this degree, with both thesis and creative component options available. Our adaptable curriculum even enables students to meet the requirements for two concentrations within the two-year timeframe. Iowa State provides exceptional opportunities for studying American Politics, particularly due to the Iowa Caucuses, which offer rich experiences in campaign work and electoral studies. Students can examine social movements, analyze how technology and social media influence modern American politics, or investigate key political institutions like Congress and the Supreme Court. The program also covers municipal and county governance. Graduates may enter state or local government, continue toward a Ph.D., or apply their methodological expertise in private sector careers.
