Ethnohistory examines past cultures by applying anthropological perspectives to historical analysis. Rather than merely incorporating personal, everyday indigenous perspectives into historical narratives (as suggested by the annales school), it involves interpreting history through indigenous frameworks. The discipline emerged with strong ties to legal and political matters in North America, particularly through the Indian Claims Commission established in 1948. This situation required anthropologists and historians to develop approaches for building historical accounts from oral traditions.

Although ethnohistory originated in North America, its methodology has worldwide relevance. Practitioners navigate challenges involving representation, documentation, inclusivity, and historical interpretation
