The Bachelor of Liberal Studies (B.L.S.) is an interdisciplinary liberal arts degree designed for flexibility. Created by Iowa's three Regent universities, this program serves Iowans facing challenges in pursuing conventional on-campus education. Unlike traditional majors, the B.L.S. allows students greater freedom in course selection while maintaining academic rigor comparable to other Iowa State University degrees. Working with an advisor, students can design a personalized curriculum aligned with their educational, career, or personal objectives.
This transfer-friendly program accepts credits from community colleges and accredited institutions, with up to 75% of degree requirements potentially transferable. Military training and technical credits may also qualify after review. While no residency is required, students must complete 30 upper-division credits at ISU. Those holding an Associate of Arts degree from Iowa, Illinois, or Minnesota community colleges automatically fulfill general education requirements. Transfer credits are first applied to general education needs, with advisors helping allocate remaining credits to distribution areas.
