The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine provides a PhD program focused on research. Students typically enter through the Indiana BioMedical Gateway (IBMG) program. During their first year, participants complete core coursework and rotate through multiple research labs. By the end of this initial year, students choose their primary research laboratory, which determines their degree department. To graduate, students must earn 90 credits, with a minimum of 35 credits from coursework and 45 credits from C859 Research in Pathology. Additional electives are available from Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, other IU School of Medicine departments, and IUPUI basic science programs, tailored to each student's research focus.
Students must have
1. A baccalaureate degree in clinical laboratory science (medical technology), cytotechnology, biology, microbiology, or chemistry is preferred. Other degrees are accepted if appropriate biology and chemistry courses were included in the undergraduate curriculum.
2. A minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 (4 point system) for math/science and total GPA.
English language requirements:
All non-native speakers of English must also submit proof of English proficiency unless the applicant has a Bachelor's degree or higher from the US or a predominantly English-speaking country.
