The Social Justice Organizing Certificate is an 18-credit program designed for degree-seeking students. This program equips future community leaders with both theoretical understanding and hands-on skills necessary to establish strong democratic systems and advance social and economic equity.
The curriculum blends academic coursework with real-world community engagement. Its foundational course, American Studies A341 (RISE - Experiential), involves students in service-learning collaborations with local community groups or labor unions.
Drawing from eight academic departments, this interdisciplinary certificate requires students to complete a minimum 150-hour internship, with the option to undertake an additional internship or capstone project with a community partner. Graduates of the Social Justice Organizing Certificate gain qualifications for careers in nonprofit leadership, public service, education, labor movements, legal fields, and other areas requiring cultural awareness and understanding of power structures. Certificate holders will be equipped to collaborate with diverse populations and empower marginalized communities to engage in democratic processes.
