The paralegal program equips students with the skills needed for careers as paralegals across various sectors after completing their studies. According to the American Bar Association (ABA) By-Laws Section 21.12, the terms "paralegal" and "legal assistant" are synonymous, describing individuals who, while not licensed attorneys, possess the necessary education, training, or experience to perform substantive legal tasks under attorney supervision. These professionals work in law firms, government agencies, or other organizations while adhering to regulations prohibiting the unauthorized practice of law. In California, paralegal standards are defined by the Business & Professions Code, Section 6450 et seq. Note that the ABA excludes certain courses—including ARTB 14, ARTD 15A, ARTD 20, ARTD 25A, ARTS 30A, ARTS 40A, THTR 11, MUS 7, AD 3, COUN 5, and Physical Wellbeing courses—from meeting General Education criteria. Students should choose alternative courses from Mt. SAC's General Education offerings to fulfill these requirements when planning their academic path.
