Radiation therapy utilizes various types of ionizing radiation to treat both cancerous and non-cancerous growths. Medical professionals in this field deliver precisely measured radiation doses to targeted areas of a patient's body, following physician instructions. They operate specialized equipment such as high-energy linear accelerators and handle radioactive substances. Radiation therapists also monitor patients' treatment responses, identify potential complications early, and decide when to pause therapy for physician review. Indiana University School of Medicine offers a four-year bachelor's degree program in Radiation Therapy with two pathways: one for students without radiography background and another for certified radiographers. The non-radiographer track involves 48 credit hours of foundational coursework followed by a 22-month professional curriculum during junior and senior years. Radiographers complete general education requirements plus a condensed 20-month professional program.
