Growing numbers of individuals with hearing impairments require interpreter services for communication access, a right protected by law. However, qualified interpreters remain in short supply across both national and local levels. IUPUI's American Sign Language (ASL)/English Interpreting Program stands among the limited bachelor's degree options nationwide. This program equips students with the skills to become adaptable, competent professionals in the fulfilling field of interpretation. Through the ASL/English Interpreting Program, students explore interpreting theories and applications while building expertise in linguistics, cultural studies, and language fundamentals. The curriculum enhances ASL and English proficiency, examines linguistic structures in both languages, addresses ethical considerations, and offers supervised training in consecutive and simultaneous interpreting techniques. Coupled with a comprehensive liberal arts education, this preparation enables graduates to enter an interpreting profession that serves varied communities across numerous subjects and environments.
