Nestled in downtown Indianapolis, Indiana's bustling capital, IUPUI's English Department serves as your direct link to diverse opportunities.
From celebrating the literary heritage of icons like Kurt Vonnegut and Mari Evans to hands-on internships with local businesses, cultural organizations, and government agencies, our department delivers rich experiential learning. Become part of our vibrant community where students and professors explore how language, literature, and composition influence perception, expand worldviews, and transform society.
Our department provides foundational and specialized education in literary criticism, composition, and linguistic studies across five key disciplines: linguistics, literature, professional writing, creative writing, and cinema studies.
Through coursework and initiatives in these fields, we foster dynamic learning communities dedicated to exploring language's role in cultivating what philosophers term "the examined life"—a conscious, ethically engaged, and socially accountable way of living. Both faculty and students strive for mastery in interpreting, appreciating, and articulating the artistry of language.
Our film studies curriculum approaches cinema with the same analytical rigor as literary texts, investigating: The unique visual language films employ to craft viewer experiences. Methods for fully comprehending these multidimensional experiences. The cultural, artistic, and industrial forces shaping cinematic works. The program features comprehensive world cinema history surveys, film-literature comparative studies, and focused examinations of pivotal periods in American filmmaking. Graduate students can pursue advanced film studies coursework and develop thesis projects on cinematic subjects.
