This program enhances undergraduate education for exceptional biology majors and aligns with all our degree tracks except Environmental Health.
Our top students frequently engage in faculty-led research, and this initiative formally acknowledges such work by incorporating it into their academic journey. The Biology Honors Program proves especially beneficial for those pursuing research careers or planning to attend graduate/professional schools.
Sophomores maintaining a minimum 3.25 GPA after their third semester will receive program invitations. Applications require academic transcripts and a personal statement detailing educational objectives, career aspirations, and reasons for pursuing honors status. The biology department's honors committee will admit up to 12 candidates annually.
Accepted students complete BIOL 484 Honors Seminar in their junior year, two terms of BIOL 483 Honors Thesis/Independent Study, and one advanced biology course. Their thesis project, conducted under faculty supervision in their chosen specialization, must gain approval from a three-member committee (including at least one external member).
Prospective participants should consult advisors early to maintain required GPAs and prepare sophomore-year applications. While open to all qualified biology majors, the program particularly benefits those planning graduate/professional education. Honors designation appears on official transcripts, and participants receive special recognition at departmental graduation events.
