The Cities, Development, and Justice (CDJ) specialization addresses pressing contemporary issues by exploring the connections between social structures and spatial dynamics. Our focus spans the environmental dimensions of economic expansion, historical transformations, and current political systems. This broad scope covers key geographical themes such as worldwide urban growth, unequal regional progress, environmental equity, activist networks, racial geography, socio-environmental knowledge systems, infrastructure governance, human mobility patterns, displaced populations, relief efforts, and global development geopolitics. The CDJ program pursues three primary research objectives: Initially, to formulate investigative frameworks aimed at producing and organizing field data. Subsequently, to engage with conceptual and analytical discussions within urban geography and development scholarship, both inside and outside geographical studies. Finally, to conduct studies capable of advancing equitable social and ecological conditions.
