The Master of Music in Composition equips students to develop their portfolio for future Ph.D. studies. Applicants usually hold a bachelor's degree in Composition and present a diverse collection of works across various ensembles and media. Composition students benefit from numerous opportunities, including: the RED NOTE New Music Festival, featuring a week of contemporary music performances by guest composers and ensembles nationwide; special reading sessions for ISU composers during RED NOTE with acclaimed national ensembles; yearly large ensemble readings with both the Illinois State University Wind Symphony and Symphony Orchestra, where selected works may be performed; semesterly chamber concerts showcasing student compositions; one-on-one instruction with faculty and renowned visiting composers; and regular performances by students, faculty, and guest artists. Notable recent performers include the ONIX Ensemble, Left Coast Chamber Ensemble, Transient Canvas, and the NOW Ensemble.
