Our mission is to examine social structures to enact meaningful change. The Sociology graduate program emphasizes research on race, systemic disparities, and African American experiences, equipping students with the tools to serve their communities professionally and personally. Through rigorous training in theory, methodology, and substantive knowledge, we empower students to critically assess systems of oppression and work toward dismantling them.
Howard University's Graduate School offers an M.A. in Sociology that readies students for diverse paths in social science research, policy analysis, public service, corporate sectors, or advanced doctoral studies. The program combines theoretical depth with empirical analysis, teaching students to merge sociological frameworks with both quantitative and qualitative research methods. This training enables graduates to produce policy-focused studies and effectively communicate findings to various stakeholders. The curriculum encourages cross-disciplinary exploration through courses in African studies, economics, history, political science, psychology, and related fields. Washington, D.C.'s unique location provides unparalleled access to leading government bodies, nonprofit organizations, and research centers. Students become part of a nurturing academic network featuring faculty mentorship, peer collaboration, and professional growth opportunities. Regular department events create platforms for presenting preliminary research and discovering innovative methodologies. Our distinguished faculty specialize in diverse areas including Africana/black feminist theory, health disparities, environmental justice, reproductive rights, global sociology, postcolonial studies, carceral systems, and economic structures within the Global South context.
