Howard University's Graduate School offers a Ph.D. in Communication Sciences and Disorders that draws outstanding students from varied backgrounds, equipping them for rewarding careers in research, academia, or clinical practice within communication sciences and related disciplines. The program seeks candidates holding a master's degree in speech-language pathology or speech, language, and hearing sciences, offering two research focus options: adult neurological studies or child language development. Students can opt for either a conventional dissertation or a structured research project. The program facilitates hands-on case research through collaborations with Howard's Speech and Hearing Clinic and affiliated institutions across the DC region, including schools, hospitals, early intervention centers, and private practices. The curriculum integrates interdisciplinary studies across psychology, special education, neurophysiology, linguistics, cognitive science, and health policy. Students benefit from a supportive academic environment and mentorship from faculty actively engaged in pioneering research. Current faculty investigations include therapeutic approaches for childhood aphasia and speech apraxia, eye-tracking applications in cognitive-linguistic processing, early aural rehabilitation strategies, bilingual and monolingual language acquisition studies, and innovative treatments for neurogenic and swallowing disorders.
