Occupational therapists are licensed healthcare professionals who help clients with injuries or disabilities improve their health through therapeutic daily activities. They focus on developing, restoring, and enhancing essential life skills for people of all ages, enabling those with physical, mental, emotional, or developmental challenges to engage fully in everyday tasks. These professionals work in diverse environments, including schools, pediatric hospitals, private homes, community centers, rehabilitation facilities, workplaces, and nursing homes, where they empower individuals to lead fulfilling lives through purposeful activities.
The Master of Science in Occupational Therapy (OT) program equips students to become certified and licensed practitioners. This 68-credit graduate curriculum spans seven semesters, combining classroom learning with six months of hands-on Level II fieldwork. Offered full-time on campus during weekdays and evenings, the program blends lab sessions with theoretical instruction. Hofstra University's OT program aims to cultivate skilled, compassionate practitioners who apply evidence-based methods, critical thinking, and lifelong learning to address professional and societal needs.
This entry-level master's program holds accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), based at 7501 Wisconsin Avenue, Suite 510E, Bethesda, MD 20814. Contact ACOTE via AOTA at (301) 652-AOTA or www.acoteonline.org. Upon graduation, students qualify for the national certification exam by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT). Passing this exam grants the Occupational Therapist, Registered (OTR) credential. While all states mandate licensure, most base it on NBCOT exam results—though felony convictions may impact certification or licensure eligibility.
Hofstra University's OT program aligns its educational philosophy with the core principles, values, and theories outlined by the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA).
