According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, health informatics represents an interdisciplinary field focused on creating, implementing, and utilizing information technology solutions for healthcare service delivery, administration, and strategic planning. Professionals in this field can pursue careers as health IT specialists, data analysts, administrators, or consultants across multiple sectors. These include health IT companies, medical facilities like hospitals and integrated delivery networks (IDN), their business associates, and public health organizations. This curriculum targets dedicated healthcare practitioners and IT experts seeking to enter or advance their expertise in health informatics. Program graduates will gain proficiency in modern health information systems and acquire skills to evaluate, develop, and oversee these systems for clinical, operational, and research applications.
An essential component of the program involves a 6-semester-hour practicum (HIT 300A and 300B), where students complete rotations at partner healthcare IT departments, including institutions like Northwell Health. The practicum delivers practical training across multiple health informatics domains, such as electronic health records, health data sharing and integration, and information analysis. These rotations, available at diverse healthcare facilities, provide comprehensive instruction in all health informatics specialties while allowing students to gain direct experience with various healthcare information systems.
