Robots are advancing from fixed-position manufacturing tools to dynamic, mobile systems capable of gathering data, processing information, and making autonomous decisions. The DARPA Grand Challenges demonstrated both the remarkable achievements in autonomous vehicle technology and the substantial challenges still ahead. Researchers at the University of Michigan are investigating the feedback control mechanisms behind bipedal robot movement, aiming to create machines that can walk on two legs with human-like dexterity. Additionally, they employ artificial intelligence methods to address planning under uncertainty, location tracking and environmental mapping, sensor data interpretation, and ongoing machine learning.
