The Family and Consumer Sciences Program, provided by the School of Education, prepares students for New York state certification in Family and Consumer Sciences across all grade levels. This curriculum combines classroom instruction with hands-on training in diverse school environments, concluding with a full-time student teaching placement. The program incorporates literacy, multicultural education, and technology throughout its coursework. It aligns with New York State Learning Standards in Physical Education, Health, Family and Consumer Sciences, as well as Career Development and Occupational Studies. Family and Consumer Sciences equips learners with modern competencies to thrive in our socially and economically varied society. With its distinctive emphasis on family dynamics, health, and interpersonal connections, the program readies students for higher education and professional pursuits. Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) represents a broad spectrum of abilities, research, and knowledge that enables individuals to make sound choices about their health, relationships, and resources to enhance their overall wellbeing. This discipline covers multiple domains such as human growth, financial management, home design, culinary science, nutrition, textiles, fashion, and consumer rights.
The 37-credit MSEd in Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) integrates academic study with practical training in various educational settings, resulting in New York state certification for FACS (grades K-12) and Work-Based Learning Coordinator Certification for Career Development. Middle school Family and Consumer Sciences instruction follows state-required coursework.
