This 32-credit master's program in literacy studies (non-certification track) provides students with current theoretical knowledge and practical skills in literacy education. The curriculum develops scholar-practitioners capable of delivering exceptional literacy instruction and providing leadership in diverse settings including private schools, tutoring organizations, after-school programs, nonprofits, and community/international agencies. Aligned with New York State Board of Regents policies and cutting-edge literacy research, our program emphasizes rigorous learning standards while addressing educational equity for economically disadvantaged and underrepresented populations. Graduates will be prepared to teach learners from early childhood through elementary (birth-grade 6) or secondary (grades 5-12) levels. The program expands conventional notions of literacy to encompass community-based practices, tackling challenges of educational access and opportunity within New York's economically, linguistically, and culturally diverse communities.
