The Literacy Studies program provides two doctoral options: a Doctor of Education (EdD) and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Literacy Studies.
LITERACY STUDIES creates an interdisciplinary platform uniting doctoral candidates and faculty exploring diverse aspects of language and literacy, encompassing: reading/writing/listening/speaking skills, digital literacies/multimodal communication, literary studies, language structure, literacy instruction across educational levels, ESL/EFL education, miscue analysis, English pedagogy, bilingual/multilingual development, and foreign language education.
This program's interdisciplinary approach shines through its five foundational courses, which investigate literacy from various perspectives: societal, cultural, literary, artistic, historical, psycholinguistic, individual, and instructional. These core courses foster vibrant intellectual exchanges among students and faculty, creating an evolving environment for exploring fundamental questions about literacy's nature, theories, and teaching methods. We aim to enhance literacy opportunities for all through research, advocacy, and excellence in teaching, supporting educators, students, families, and educational institutions.
Our doctoral program develops literacy scholars and professionals for academic, school, and community leadership roles. Candidates can select either the EdD or PhD track. Although each degree offers distinct advantages, both are universally acknowledged as terminal qualifications in the U.S., U.K., Canada, Australia, and other nations.
