The Advanced Certificate in Rehabilitation Counseling is designed for professionals holding a master's or doctoral degree in fields related to rehabilitation, counseling, disability studies, therapy, health services, employment, wellness, or human development. This program prepares candidates to meet the qualifications for the Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC) examination. Relevant backgrounds include mental health counseling, psychology, social work, special education, occupational therapy, and school counseling, among others. Students must complete at least 12 semester hours, with potential additional coursework or fieldwork as advised. An individualized study plan will be created to ensure CRC exam eligibility, with required courses identified through a CRCC transcript review before admission.
While Hofstra University offers master's programs in Rehabilitation Counseling and Rehabilitation Counseling in Mental Health, these cater to students with little or no prior training in the field. The Advanced Certificate, however, addresses the needs of degreed professionals requiring specific coursework to fulfill CRCC's Category 3 requirements. Credentialing candidates must show specialized coursework across seven curriculum areas and relevant fieldwork or supervised employment experience. Note that participants in this program cannot access RSA grant funding available through other rehabilitation programs.
Most students finish this program within 18 months.
