The AS degree in dental hygiene equips students with the expertise needed to pursue licensure as dental hygienists. As crucial members of dental care teams, hygienists perform essential procedures like scaling and root planing, preventive cleanings for patients of all ages, dental sealant application, radiographic imaging, and personalized patient instruction.
This intensive program spans five continuous semesters, demanding 35-40 weekly hours of study. To achieve registered hygienist status, graduates must successfully complete three examinations: the National Dental Hygiene Board, Florida Dental Hygiene Board, and Florida Laws and Rules tests. The program additionally offers optional certifications for expanded duties authorized under Florida Statute Title XXXII for dental support professionals.
To be eligible for admission to an associate degree program at HCC, applicants must have the equivalent of one of the following: high school equivalency certificate (GED), Associate or higher degree, standard high school diploma.
