The three-year, full-time Master of Divinity (MDiv) program blends demanding academic study with hands-on practice across diverse environments including places of worship, healthcare facilities, shelters, and other care institutions. Participants examine their own religious heritage alongside various other traditions, learning with peers from different faiths and perspectives. The program actively welcomes those who identify as spiritual but not religious, atheist, agnostic, or those pursuing personal spiritual growth - these individuals form a significant portion of the HDS MDiv student body.
Graduates of the Master of Divinity program depart HDS equipped with the understanding and practical skills needed to serve religious communities, engage in spiritually enriching academic pursuits, address the concerns of diverse communities, and communicate effectively in both pastoral and public contexts.
The MDiv curriculum features:
In-depth study of religious traditions that inform ministerial vocations through scholarship, spirituality, and practice
Mastery of essential academic methods for religious studies
Proficiency in either a scriptural language or theological research language, enabling lifelong application in ministry and scholarship
Ministerial training combining classroom instruction with real-world experience
Substantial exposure to religious traditions beyond one's own background
Development of intellectual, spiritual, and pastoral flexibility to navigate today's multifaceted religious, cultural, and ethical landscapes with competence, assurance, compassion, and poise.
Students must have a postsecondary institution attended (including work done at any school of Harvard University) showing all undergraduate work are required.
