Students pursuing this discipline will be associated with the Department of Environmental Health at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. This department conducts groundbreaking research and provides cross-disciplinary education in environmental health, focusing on how air quality, water systems, food contaminants, consumer products, urban design, and workplace conditions significantly impact community well-being. Faculty investigate the causes and prevention of environment-related diseases, injuries, and disabilities, while also exploring ergonomics, safety protocols, climate change effects, industrial hygiene, sustainable resource management, and policy development. They serve as pioneers in evidence-based public health improvements. Research initiatives span diverse methodologies, from molecular investigations and exposure analysis to engineering solutions, epidemiological studies, risk evaluation, and policy assessment. The department tackles intricate challenges demanding expertise from multiple fields. Its academic team, researchers, and learners represent the interdisciplinary essence of environmental health, comprising professionals from chemistry, engineering, epidemiology, clinical practice, industrial hygiene, urban development, climate science, applied mathematics, medicine, nursing, physiology, cellular biology, molecular biology, and microbiology.
A distinguished undergraduate record, as well as excellent performance in any graduate work undertaken, is required for admission to this program. Although a previous graduate degree is not required, students in any of the fields of study should have successfully completed coursework in introductory statistics or quantitative methods. In general, applicants must demonstrate strong enthusiasm and ability for rigorous pursuit of scientific knowledge in public health. Preference will be given to applicants who have either some relevant work experience or graduate work in the chosen field of study after completion of a bachelor’s degree.
All applicants to the PhD Program in Population Health Sciences are required to select a field of study in their application and indicate an area of specialization. Secondary interest in an additional field of study may also be indicated in the application and statement of purpose.
