Harvard's Musicology program provides rigorous education in historical and cultural music studies. While focusing primarily on Western traditions, the curriculum increasingly incorporates diverse global perspectives. Our department embraces a broad definition of musicology and inspires students to adopt similarly wide-ranging viewpoints. Graduate-level courses primarily consist of research seminars covering specialized topics, theoretical frameworks, methodological approaches, and current field developments. Faculty-led proseminars welcome both graduate and undergraduate participation. After completing two years, graduate candidates undertake a General Examination. Successful examinees proceed to teaching roles and dissertation proposal development in their third year, with subsequent years dedicated to instruction, scholarly research, writing, and career advancement.
