Harvard University's Italian Studies Ph.D. program offers a cutting-edge, interdisciplinary curriculum focused on pioneering research across various periods and disciplines. The program covers Medieval and Renaissance studies, 19th- and 20th-century literature and society, modern Italian culture, film and media studies, design history, cultural economics, and data analysis. We emphasize establishing strong historical and philological groundwork while engaging with contemporary cultural movements, novel scholarly approaches, and digital technologies. Each spring, graduate students participate in the Italian Studies Colloquium, featuring weekly discussions with newly published authors. The Espresso Talks—casual gatherings where students and faculty analyze recent books, films, and cultural developments over coffee—further enrich this experience. Students can publish articles, critiques, interviews, and video documentaries in Romance Sphere, our digital magazine. Additionally, many participate in complementary programs like Critical Media Practice and metaLAB (at) Harvard, an experimental workshop investigating digital culture's evolving role in arts and humanities research.

Qualification Requirements

GSAS welcomes applications for admission from individuals who have or will have by the time of matriculation a BA, BS, or equivalent undergraduate degree (for prospective international students, a three- or four-year undergraduate degree from an institution of recognized standing) and actively seeks applicants from groups historically underrepresented in graduate schools. Applicants are required to upload transcript copies from each college/university they attended into our online application system: official hard copy/paper transcripts are not required at the time of application. Applicants who are non-native English speakers and who received their undergraduate degree from an academic institution where English is not the primary language of instruction must prove their English proficiency by earning either a minimum score of 80 on the Internet based test (iBT) of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or a minimum score of 6.5 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic test.
