The Department provides PhD programs in ancient history, Byzantine Greek studies, classical archaeology, classical philology, classical philosophy, medieval Latin, and modern Greek. Our scholars and graduate researchers employ cutting-edge methods to explore the ancient Greek and Roman civilizations, incorporating diverse disciplines such as archaeology, art history, historical linguistics, literary theory, philosophy, and digital humanities. We view Byzantine, medieval Latin, and modern Greek studies as essential extensions of classical antiquity research. Our affiliated faculty specialize in areas including early Christian studies, Greek legal systems, Renaissance classical reception, and Byzantine historiography. The department provides expert instruction in specialized fields like papyrology, epigraphy, ancient manuscript studies, and coinage analysis. Qualification Requirements

Entering students are expected to have competence in Greek and Latin sufficient to take upper-level courses in Greek and above the beginning level in Latin on entering graduate school.

Individuals who have or will have by the time of matriculation a BA, BS, or equivalent undergraduate degree (for prospective international students, a three- or four-year undergraduate degree from an institution of recognized standing) and actively seeks applicants from groups historically underrepresented in graduate schools. Applicants must receive a minimum score of 80 for the TOEFL, and it is not common for applicants to be admitted with TOEFL scores below 90. The minimum IELTS Academic score is 6.5. Some programs may require higher scores. Application Deadline: January 5.
