Since 1986, the Harvard School of Dental Medicine has provided a specialized program in geriatric dentistry. This program awards a geriatric dentistry certificate (two-year duration), a Master of Medical Sciences degree (MMSc - three years, or two years for candidates with a prior MPH or equivalent), and a Doctor of Medical Sciences degree (DMSc - four years). The HSDM Advanced Graduate Education Program in Geriatric Dentistry (Certificate) is a two-year multidisciplinary initiative combining dentistry, medicine, and mental/behavioral health to educate dental fellows in caring for elderly patients, particularly underserved communities. Structured around four core elements—academic studies, clinical practice, teaching/administrative experience, and research—this program equips future geriatric dentistry specialists with the expertise to practice in various settings (institutional, community, and private) while advancing academic and professional knowledge in the field.
