Electrical Engineering has consistently served as a foundational force behind innovations that enhance living standards, drive economic development, and tackle societal issues. It remains essential in managing power and energy distribution, communications, and computing, even as the mediums for transmitting power have advanced from metal cables to nanowires or optical fibers, communication networks have shifted from wired to wireless to neural connections, and fundamental electrical switches have evolved from vacuum tubes to transistors to carbon nanotubes.

At Harvard College, students select a concentration, which is the term used for a major. All incoming undergraduates, including those planning to pursue engineering and applied sciences, submit their applications directly to Harvard College. You will declare your concentration, or field of study, in the fall of your sophomore year. You can pick from 50 concentrations and 49 secondary fields (according to the Harvard DSO website).

The Electrical Engineering concentration covers a wide array of subjects, from the physics of novel materials and devices to the circuits and next-generation computing systems built from them, and the algorithms that operate on these platforms. Key areas of study include power systems, (micro)electronics, control systems, signal processing, telecommunications, and computing systems. Students gain skills in analyzing, designing, and constructing devices and systems for computation, communication, and information transfer.
