Many students who opt for a philosophy concentration at Harvard begin with no prior experience in the subject. Those with some exposure often discover that collegiate philosophy differs significantly from their previous encounters. Starting fresh puts you at no disadvantage. Our introductory courses (numbered 1-90) equip students with both subject knowledge and essential skills like philosophical writing and text analysis. The department provides additional writing assistance through our Writing Fellow. Since philosophical writing is unique, no prior Expos coursework is required—we'll guide you through it in our classes. Introductory courses aren't mandatory either. The philosophy program offers flexibility—there's no prescribed course sequence, and most classes have no prerequisites, allowing students to tailor their academic journey according to their intellectual pursuits.
