Students at Harvard who select History as their main area of focus will gain from the Department's thoughtfully structured curriculum. This program teaches how historians reconstruct the past while developing analytical, writing, and research abilities. Throughout their education, history majors utilize numerous historical assets both on campus and throughout Boston, including Houghton Library's extensive archives and other local collections. Many concentrators also pursue international study opportunities, either during term time or for thesis work. Joint concentration options include Ancient History (Greek & Roman), East Asian History, Near Eastern History, African and African American Studies, and History combined with Anthropology. The department also supports joint concentrations with various area studies and language programs like AAAS and Germanic Languages, pending approval from the Director of Undergraduate Studies. While joint concentrations with Economics or Government aren't available, students can effectively combine History with these disciplines through Secondary Field options.
