Governors State's Master of Fine Arts in Independent Film and Digital Imaging (IFDI) empowers you to cultivate your unique artistic perspective as a filmmaker or photographer while achieving your educational, creative, and career aspirations. The IFDI MFA program champions globally acclaimed cinematic and photographic works that harness cutting-edge technology to amplify diverse voices, particularly those historically marginalized in visual storytelling.
At its core, the MFA-IFDI prioritizes artistic authorship. We mentor students through every creative phase of photography and filmmaking. Our filmmakers immerse themselves in solo and small-team projects spanning development, production, post-production, and distribution - encouraging you to envision your thesis project early, ensuring coursework seamlessly integrates with crafting an impactful documentary or narrative film. Photographers refine technical skills and aesthetic vision to prepare for culminating gallery exhibitions. With class sizes limited to 12 students, we emphasize personalized attention to foster each individual's growth. Our diverse student body spans generations from 20s to 70s, with most being mid-career professionals seeking transformative creative opportunities they've never previously encountered.
