Organic chemistry focuses on the composition, characteristics, and interactions of carbon-containing compounds, encompassing the analysis of chemical processes. Researchers in chemistry explore the molecular behavior of DNA, proteins, and sugars. Faculty in the Chemistry Department pursue investigations across diverse fields such as biophysics, computer-aided chemistry, protein engineering, molecular motion, enzyme activity, pharmaceutical development, nucleic acid studies, NMR technology, and fluid dynamics.
The department boasts state-of-the-art resources to enhance both research and education, featuring six advanced NMR systems, six mass spectrometry units with LC-MS, GC-MS, electrospray, and MALDI capabilities, plus high-resolution options. Additional assets include two Biacore SPR instruments, a combinatorial chemistry lab, computing clusters, and access to university supercomputers. Chemistry faculty maintain exceptional levels of external funding and scholarly output, regularly achieving top rankings for research grants and publications within the institution.
