School psychology professionals receive comprehensive training in both education and psychology. They develop expertise in addressing challenges surrounding children's learning and growth within educational settings. Much of their preparation focuses on how students engage with school as a social system. This specialized focus requires deep knowledge of educational philosophies and methodologies, along with advanced understanding of psychological concepts like learning processes, personality development, and social skills. The M.Ed./Ed.S. dual degree program in school psychology prepares you with this same foundational knowledge in education and psychology, enabling you to effectively handle educational and developmental concerns in school environments.
The school psychology curriculum emphasizes two primary training areas. First, it builds expertise about school systems, teaching approaches, research methodologies, and learning/development topics. Second, it cultivates practical abilities in cognitive and academic evaluation, interviewing techniques, and consultation with educators and families.
Our program actively promotes diversity through multiple initiatives: attracting and supporting students from varied cultural and linguistic backgrounds, incorporating multicultural content throughout coursework, faculty engagement in culturally-responsive research and community projects, and involvement in related grant-funded research and training programs.
