The English Department provides Master of Arts (M.A.), Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.), and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree programs. The M.A. program features specializations in literary studies along with rhetoric and composition, while the M.F.A. program focuses on poetry or fiction. The Ph.D. program offers concentrations in literary studies, creative writing, and rhetoric/composition. Students pursuing an M.A. gain preparation for advanced graduate work or professional roles in writing, editing, technical communication, research, or business, typically completing the program in two to three years. The M.F.A. and Ph.D. programs equip graduates for careers in writing, college-level teaching, and academic research. The M.F.A. generally takes three to four years, involving coursework and a significant creative thesis, while the Ph.D. typically requires four to six years, including coursework, exams, and a dissertation. Beyond courses in British, American, and Transnational Literatures, literary theory, folklore, rhetoric, composition, technical/professional writing, and creative writing, the department also offers training in scholarly editing through various ongoing publishing initiatives.
