The Ceramics program at Georgia State University promotes individual artistic exploration, technical mastery across diverse methods, and professional-level presentation skills. Participants build comprehensive expertise in techniques and processes that prioritize experimentation and conceptual growth. Mixed media investigation is encouraged, grounded in fundamental ceramic art principles. Students gain insight into the extensive history of ceramics while examining current practices.
Instruction covers handbuilding, wheel throwing, mold creation, slip casting, press molding, clay extrusion, figurative sculpture, portrait sculpture, glaze formulation, decal production, and china painting.
Through engagement with the student group Student League of Independent Potters (SLIPS), participants acquire event coordination and marketing experience. The organization oversees budget management, contributes to fundraising via two yearly sales events, and arranges two annual workshops featuring visiting artists.
