The Department of World Languages and Cultures has three primary missions: fostering appreciation for humanistic values via foreign language, literature, and cultural studies; teaching languages as practical communication tools; and equipping students for academic pursuits and global business careers. Situated within a vibrant urban university in an increasingly international city, the department actively addresses the growing language requirements of government, corporate, and professional sectors. It emphasizes that true language mastery and deep cultural understanding are fundamental for advanced studies across its programs.
The department houses CIRCLE (Center for International Resources and Collaborative Language Engagement), a versatile academic hub offering drop-in tutoring for all university-taught languages along with digital learning tools like software, apps, and multimedia materials. CIRCLE also organizes cultural events, conversation gatherings, discussion forums, social activities, and language technology workshops. This center supports institutional goals of curriculum internationalization and developing global skills among students and staff. Beyond core language courses, students are encouraged to select complementary classes in fields like additional languages, history, arts, business, and education. Department advisors are available to help shape personalized academic pathways.
