The Department of World Languages and Cultures has three primary objectives: fostering appreciation for humanistic values via foreign language, literature, and cultural studies; teaching languages as practical communication tools; and equipping students for academic pursuits and global business careers. Situated within a vibrant urban university in an increasingly international city, the department actively addresses the growing language demands of government, corporate, and professional sectors. It emphasizes that true language mastery and cultural understanding serve as foundational elements for advanced studies across its programs.
Housing the Center for International Resources and Collaborative Language Engagement (CIRCLE), the department operates a versatile academic hub offering walk-in tutoring for all Georgia State-taught languages alongside digital learning tools (software, apps, media). CIRCLE also organizes cultural immersion activities like conversation groups, discussion forums, social gatherings, and tech-enhanced language workshops. This initiative aligns with the university's strategic vision to internationalize curricula and strengthen global competencies among students and staff. Beyond core language courses, students are encouraged to supplement their studies with complementary disciplines such as additional languages, history, philosophy, arts, business, and education. Department faculty actively mentor students in crafting personalized academic pathways.
