Neuroengineering is a biomedical engineering field that applies engineering methods to study, restore, replace, improve, or utilize neural system functions. Experts in neural engineering possess specialized skills to address design challenges where biological neural tissue meets artificial systems. Key objectives involve rehabilitating and enhancing human capabilities through direct connections between the nervous system and engineered devices.

Contemporary studies primarily investigate how sensory and motor systems encode and process information, examine changes in these processes during disease, and explore ways to modify them using artificial technologies like brain-machine interfaces and neural prostheses.
