Biomedical engineering combines engineering, biology, and medicine to enhance human health through interdisciplinary approaches that merge engineering principles with biomedical research and clinical applications. This field encompasses- Gaining novel insights into biological systems by creatively applying engineering-based experimental and analytical methods. Creating innovative tools, computational methods, procedures, and frameworks that push forward biological and medical sciences while enhancing healthcare services. The Ph.D. program represents the highest research degree, awarded for comprehensive expertise in applying engineering to biological and medical challenges, along with specialized research culminating in an original dissertation. While many Ph.D. applicants hold master's degrees, we frequently accept outstanding bachelor's degree holders directly into the doctoral program. Advanced coursework is customized through faculty advising to align with each student's research focus and professional objectives.

Qualification Requirements

Applicants for admission to the Graduate Program in Biomedical Engineering must meet the general requirements of The Graduate School and are expected to hold a baccalaureate degree from an ABET accredited engineering program or its equivalent. Applicants with baccalaureates in other disciplines are considered on a case-by-case basis.

Admission to the biomedical engineering graduate programs normally requires a GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for all graduate and undergraduate work, and Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores of 156 for Quantitative, 154 for Verbal, and 4.0 for Analytical. Additional application materials include a statement describing your reasons for wanting to pursue graduate education in Biomedical Engineering and letters of recommendation from three (3) faculty members who are familiar with your academic record. Satisfying the above requirements does not guarantee admission to the biomedical engineering graduate program. At the same time, admission decisions are made by considering all aspects of an application without regard to minimum grade/score requirements alone. Applications are reviewed by a committee of BME Faculty on a rolling basis. For the Graduate School, the minimum acceptable TOEFL score is 550 (paper-based) 213 (computer-based), or 79 (internet-based). The minimum IELTS score is 6.5
