As environmental challenges like degradation, resource scarcity, and climate change become increasingly pressing, urban infrastructure is undergoing a transformative rethink. Moving beyond traditional physical systems that ensure city safety, health, and efficiency, innovative 'blue-green' infrastructures now deliver ecosystem benefits across various scales. Ecological infrastructure has become essential to urban planning, bridging the gap between community development and environmental solutions. The Sino-US Eco-Urban Lab, a collaborative initiative between Tongji University and Georgia Tech, integrates diverse fields in global research to assess urban infrastructure and form through quantitative metrics. Through design studios and workshops, the lab applies urban design experiments to validate interdisciplinary research, showcasing how ecological infrastructure can enhance public spaces while complementing modern real estate projects. Current research emphasizes water resource management in storm systems, near-zero energy district planning, and sustainable urban performance indicators, shifting focus from rigid infrastructure to holistic urban design considerations including spatial organization, public areas, and architectural solutions.
