The Linguistics Department at Georgetown University focuses on exploring various linguistic aspects through multiple research approaches. Our faculty investigates language by studying its structure, how it's learned, its usage in real-world settings, and through computer-based analysis. Recognizing that diverse perspectives are essential for comprehensive understanding—and that no single approach can answer all linguistic questions—we maintain an academic environment rooted in intellectual diversity. The Master of Science program enables students to specialize in specific linguistic areas, enhancing their knowledge while developing valuable skills. Graduate students choose from four specialization tracks: Applied Linguistics, Computational Linguistics, Sociolinguistics, or Theoretical Linguistics
The Applied Linguistics concentration examines the processes of second language learning and instruction. Research areas within this specialization encompass: second language acquisition theory and teaching methods, cognitive approaches to SLA, language input and interaction, language assessment, discourse analysis, language policy, the relationship between linguistics and literacy, as well as multilingualism studies.
