Georgetown Law is recognized as the nation's premier institution for national security law education. Students benefit from an exceptional course selection covering cutting-edge subjects ranging from cyber defense and biological threats to asylum policies and global trade regulations.
Our resident faculty members are distinguished experts who shine in academic research, creative training exercises, hands-on learning programs, professional practice, and policy development. Situated in Washington, D.C., we draw visiting instructors and adjunct professors who are top professionals from government agencies, corporate firms, and nonprofit organizations.
Each year, we enroll about thirty students in our program. These include mid-level national security professionals seeking specialized knowledge, established attorneys shifting their focus to this field, international lawyers familiar with both global and American legal systems, and a select few recent law school graduates.
The National Security LLM curriculum mandates enrollment in a first-semester Proseminar in National Security Law. Participants must also earn additional credits through specialized courses designated in the National Security Law section of the Curriculum Guide, which must incorporate either International Law I, Foreign Relations Law, or an equivalent public international law course. With Program Director approval, externships may count toward these specialization requirements.
