The Linguistics Department at Georgetown University focuses on exploring various linguistic aspects through multiple research approaches. We investigate language by studying its structure, how it's learned, its usage in different contexts, and through computer-based modeling. Recognizing that each analytical perspective offers valuable insights and that no single approach can answer all linguistic questions, we foster an environment of intellectual diversity. Our department provides four specialized tracks for earning a Ph.D. in Linguistics (detailed below). Regardless of specialization, our professors mentor students closely, nurturing their academic interests and research projects. Applied Linguistics, Computational Linguistics, Sociolinguistics, Theoretical Linguistics
Computational Linguistics involves the computer-assisted examination of language. This dynamic field produces both theoretical breakthroughs about human language capabilities and practical applications with significant societal benefits. Our computational linguistics scholars and students engage with the broader GUCL interdisciplinary community across campus.
