The Georgetown Linguistics Department focuses on exploring various linguistic aspects through multiple research approaches. We investigate language by studying its structure, how it's learned, its usage in different contexts, and through computational analysis. Recognizing that each research perspective offers valuable insights and that no single approach can answer all linguistic questions, we foster an inclusive environment for linguistic scholarship rooted in intellectual diversity. Our department provides four specialized tracks for the Linguistics Ph.D. program (detailed below). Regardless of specialization, our faculty mentor students throughout their research journey, nurturing their academic interests. Applied Linguistics, Computational Linguistics, Sociolinguistics, Theoretical Linguistics
Theoretical Linguistics focuses on language's fundamental structural components, including phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. Beyond these core areas, researchers in this specialization also examine language acquisition processes and historical language development.
