The Georgetown Linguistics Department focuses on studying various linguistic aspects through multiple research approaches. We investigate language by analyzing its structure, learning processes, contextual usage, and computer-based simulations. Recognizing that each analytical perspective offers valuable insights and that no single approach can fully explain language (or cover all relevant inquiries), we establish a comprehensive linguistics program rooted in a tradition of intellectual diversity. Our department provides four specialized tracks for earning a Ph.D. in Linguistics (listed below). Across all specializations, faculty members mentor students individually, fostering their academic growth and research interests. Applied Linguistics, Computational Linguistics, Sociolinguistics, Theoretical Linguistics
