The Biochemistry and Chemistry programs aim to deliver solid foundational knowledge in scientific principles and core methodologies, advancing to specialized upper-level coursework and research experiences. The American Chemical Society-accredited Chemistry program enables students to investigate chemistry's five key areas: organic, physical, analytical, inorganic, and biochemistry. The Biochemistry program provides thorough preparation in this evolving discipline through targeted lecture and laboratory courses, plus the flexibility to customize studies with three upper-level electives.
Georgetown's ACS-approved Chemistry degree equips graduates for advanced study in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or related sciences at institutions nationwide, as well as for medical school, combined M.D.-Ph.D. programs, and diverse career paths in industry, government, academia, and research (see our Learning Objectives). By incorporating introductory biology, the program meets all medical school prerequisite requirements. The Biochemistry curriculum similarly provides robust preparation for medical school admission, graduate work in Biochemistry, or advanced study in medical sciences - particularly ideal for M.D.-Ph.D. candidates. Our alumni have pursued immediate employment in industrial, academic, or research settings, as well as advanced degrees in law or business administration.
