The Department of Art and Art History welcomes students to discover the realms of artistic creation, interpretation, and exhibition—a domain that has long been central to human culture and intellectual exploration. Our community of students and scholars engages in creative practice and research to shed light on art's past and future with precision, depth, and creativity. These disciplines fully reflect Georgetown University's commitment to knowledge creation and dissemination. Through art, we can express and examine concepts about identity, society, history, spirituality, governance, and our surroundings with remarkable immediacy. Learners interact with artifacts, produce works, and engage with visual concepts spanning eras and regions. Developing visual fluency and cultural understanding proves vital for thoughtful, meaningful participation in contemporary society. The Department provides undergraduate degrees in Art (Studio Practice) and Art History, along with a graduate program in Art and Museum Studies. Annually, we host over 600 students in diverse courses spanning from Animation to Zen Buddhist Art, all maintaining intimate class sizes for personalized guidance and vibrant dialogue.
