The Art History program at American University critically examines the power dynamics shaping visual culture and its analysis. As the sole art history department focused on feminist scholarship and its cross-disciplinary connections, we champion alternative historical perspectives that examine diverse lived experiences within a global context. Our shared mission involves probing the complex interplay between visual representation, societal influence, and personal identity across all spectrums, including gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and sexual orientation.
Our comprehensive art history program provides extensive coverage, specialized focus, and opportunities to learn from distinguished faculty who are experts in their disciplines. With about 40 undergraduate and 25 graduate students participating annually, the Art History Program fosters an intimate academic environment where every student benefits from personalized faculty guidance throughout their AU journey.
