As part of the social and behavioral sciences within the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences, this program explores the interplay between society and environment, with emphasis on sustainability challenges, urban growth, and unequal resource allocation. Alumni build fulfilling careers across government agencies, NGOs, and private industry.
The graduate curriculum centers on three key themes aligned with faculty research: urban development and migration, global environmental shifts and sustainability, and geospatial methodologies. Faculty bring specialized knowledge of regions including North America, Latin America, South Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and the Arctic.
The MS degree combines mandatory courses with electives, offering both thesis and non-thesis tracks over two years. The Campbell Endowment provides funding for summer fieldwork tied to thesis projects, while various fellowships and assistantships offer additional financial support for graduate students.
